Term One Update

Kia ora, what a great start to the year we have had, the hub is absolutely buzzing and the atmosphere up in Kaupeka is energetic and really positive towards our learning.

This blog post is an Term Update and will replace what used to be a Hub Newsletter. You can expect these termly. We will also post other blog posts, which will share students learning, upcoming Hub events, notices and reminders, these will be posted more frequently.

If you haven't already please use the follow by email gadget on the right hand side to get email updates from this blog (please note these are different from the School App alerts, which are not connected to the blogs).

Other places we will communicate with you are our Facebook, St Francis of Assisi School App, School Website and school newsletters.

It has been great getting to meet those of you who have been able to come in already.

For those of you who haven't made it in yet or are new to join us in Kaupeka we are situated above the Administration Block. Please feel free to call in and check out the space before or after school, we would love to meet you.

Our team is made up of four home base teachers, Miss Whitney Hansen (Home Base 1 and Team Leader), Mrs Tracey Bryce (Home Base 1), Mrs Siobhan Cummings (Home Base 2) and Miss Wilson (Home Base 3).

Your child’s home base teacher is your first point of contact, should you have any concerns or queries throughout this year, however as the Kaupeka Hub is collaborative, all teachers will have input into your child’s learning.

Our doors are literally and figuratively open, please feel free to speak with us before or after school, but also please respect that these times, provide a valuable opportunity for us to make connections with students. If you would like to talk to any of us in more detail than this time allows, we will be more than happy to organise another time to meet with you.

A big thank you to those of you that have filled out the Google Forms we have asked for so far. For anyone who still has some to fill out or has been unable to due to issues via the newsletter links the three or four that apply to our students are:

EOTC Blanket Consent Form
Publishing Information Consent Form
Digital Technologies Guidelines

Bring Your Own Chromebook (BYOC) Agreement - This is only if your child owns their own Chromebook and is bringing it to school.

If you do not have access to the internet at home or are having problems with the Google Forms, call in to the office and use the Laptop set up in there, where someone will be able to assist you.

There will be more Google Forms throughout the year, we will post these on the blog and let you know they are here via email. The next ones to look out for will be regarding camp and will be posted in the next couple of weeks along with some more details about camp.

We have planned an exciting camp this year, to Glentui Meadows. This will be for all Year 7/8 Students, in Week 10 of this term, and will be 3 nights and four days, Tuesday 4 April - Friday 7 April.

As yet, the cost of camp has not been finalised, but at this stage the approximate cost is $250. You will have received a fundraising form last week to help raise money towards this camp and the Year 5/6 Camp, the more money we raise the lower the cost will be per student across both hubs.

A few other things to note in Kaupeka 2017 are:

School Uniform - All students are expected to be in full school uniform, this includes footwear, to and from school everyday except Thursday when they are to come in their PE uniform. Students are expected to have their PE uniform with them to change into Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This term and Term 4 students are also expected to have a blue school hat. Please ensure all clothing items are clearly labeled.

Technology - On a Monday afternoon we bus to and from Technology. This starts on Monday 13 February. Due to traffic there are some days we are back slightly after the bell, but we will endeavour to be back as close to 3pm as possible.

Drink Bottles - Students are to bring water only in their drink bottles.

Home Learning - This year there is no set weekly Home Learning, however from time to time there will be tasks that carry over from in school learning and when necessary students will be given the opportunity to finish learning tasks at home if they have not managed their time effectively at school. We would appreciate it if you could continue to expect your child to read every day/night for at least 15-20 minutes. We will provide some more information on this at our Meet the Team evening, Tuesday 14 February.

Chromebooks - After a busy few days of issuing, setting up and signing on we have 1:1 Chromebooks across the entire hub, and the students are loving it. Throughout this term we will be providing Parent Education Evenings based on what we are doing around learning with digital technologies. Our first evening will be on Monday 27 February at 7pm, look out for more information about this in the newsletters and on the calendar and hopefully we will see you there.

In the mean time ask your child to show you around their Google Drive (accessible via any internet browser on most internet capable devices), and to share what they have been doing so far this term. If you have any queries or concerns before the upcoming sessions please feel free to email

We are hoping to see you at the upcoming Meet the Team Evening, Tuesday 14 February.

There will be two sessions on the Tuesday. The first will be held at 3.30pm and the other at 6.00pm. This will be an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers and hear about our school programme. You are welcome to bring a fish 'n' chip tea on this evening as well.

Again welcome to 2017 Kaupeka, we hope you are as excited as we are about this year.

Ngā mihi

Kaupeka Hub
